Owning Your Name On Twitter

Just like every good Twitter account owner should, I look at the profiles of my newest followers. I think of it as a way to shake hands with the person who just said, “Nice to meet you. I’d like to hear what you have to say.” I don’t really post all that much because I can’t seem to find the time, so when I get new followers I have to wonder, “Why me? What am I saying that makes you want to follow my every word?” Well, lately I haven’t had to wonder that because I’ve been a victim of Twitter Spam – people creating profiles and following anyone and everyone, just for the sake of doing so or linking to an affiliate site. Luckily, I registered my name over a year ago, but what if you haven’t already? Ummm, you better do so now!

I registered my name and other variations to ensure my online reputation was sound on Twitter. There are fake accounts popping up for people and brands all day, so it’s a good idea to mention in your profile on Twitter that this is your one and only real account.

Recently I came across a list of fake accounts that have been created around top brands: adidas, Dell, Home Depot, insert any celebrity name here. Point is – register your Twitter account name and variations just as you would a domain name and variations to protect your brand.
