Who’s Listening to Podcasts?

A recent study of one thousand adults found some interesting facts about podcast usage. A relatively low number of those surveyed – about 32% – actually knew what a podcast was, leaving the remaining two-thirds still in the dark. Then, only about one-third of those who were familiar with the term “podcast” said that they had actually listened to a podcast. So while a seemingly small portion of the internet populations is utilizing podcast technology, that number still pans out to be about 5 million users. Not bad for an Internet technology that was all but unknown one year ago. Predictions are that 2006 will be an even bigger year, nearly doubling to 10 million users. Additionally, mapping to usage trends of the early and emerging Internet, women have taken the lead in podcast adoption. Of those who had downloaded a podcast in the last seven days versus those who hadn’t, women lead the pack with 51% having downloaded recently, while only 39% of the male population had downloaded.
