Tool Review: Spokeo Activity Tracker

What happens when 5 Stanford classmates come up with an idea to create a tool that will help you keep up with your friends across multiple social networking sites? Well of course they start out in a basement somewhere, but some never get out of that basement unless they have someone like Guy Kawasaki advising them.

Spokeo is marketed as a tool to keep up with your friend’s activities, but what about your enemies (competitors)? Yes, you don’t need permission to access public information – read Spokeo’s thoughts on privacy. I think it has potential to help round out your secret weapons when exploiting competitor faults and combating your own reputation issues. And it will save you a ton of time by tracking content across multiple sites so you don’t have to visit all 30+ top tier social networking sites. Spokeo is a must have tool in your Online Reputation Management arsenal since it searches popular networks for blogs, photos, videos and music that your employees, partners, or even competitors have posted to.

Steps:

  1. Go to the Spokeo site and sign up
  2. Sign up using AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo, if you want to use your address book housed in those email accounts. However you can bypass this and sign up without using an existing account. I used my work address to test instead of my personal email account.
  3. If you went the non-mainstream email route like I did, then you would click on the”+” at the bottom left side of the screen to add a new friend.
  4. I added Kent’s email address, but could have added a profile url as well.
  5. I can now see the sites Kent has created a public profile for and all his postings.
  6. Sorting is pretty limited but I can sort by site and that’s about it.
  7. I can also go to the summary page to see new posts or activity
