Brown Bag Podcast, Episode 5: Johnny Hartman on the Metaverse and Beyond

For our January Brown Bag Podcast, we spoke with Johnny Hartman, VP of Innovation at Iceberg Theory. Johnny is a futurist, technologist, and enthusiast of the Web 3.0 Metaverse. He has been in the world of virtual reality since 1994 and has seen the digital world grow and morph to where we are today. He shared some surprising insights with us and a vast amount of knowledge gleaned from his years in the industry.

In this episode, Johnny discusses the many achievements of Iceberg Theory, highlighting their work in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, when they were able to livestream large scale events using real-time game engine techniques, all hosted from a computer in Sherwood, Oregon with a single nonredundant internet connection. Johnny’s team continues to push boundaries with RTCGI, or real time computer graphics, which allows for live action videos at a fraction of the cost by using a variety of techniques.

Johnny goes on to tell us about his work in VR, and why it is one of the most underdeveloped industries, aside from in the gaming world. However, VR can go far beyond gaming and be incredibly useful in a whole host of industries.

Johnny also gives us his insights on the Metaverse, and what to him is the most convincing reason why it will be real. As it comes to fruition, Johnny and his team will be at the forefront of these cutting-edge technologies, and we are excited to see what may be in store!
